Gooey, dripping, caramel-draped, apple-ensconced French toast. Really, need I say more? Picture a sunny Sunday morning. The coffee is brewing and the scent of buttery vanilla wafts through the air. This is how I celebrate having my whole family at home and it is times like these that become our fondest memories. Bonding with family over delicious food is just a really special thing. Try this recipe with your family and create a treasured tradition that will become a part of your family’s memories.
Ingredients
- 1 cup brown sugar
- ½ cup butter
- 2 tablespoons corn syrup (light)
- 3 granny smith apples, peeled and sliced thin
- 6 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 ½ cups whole milk
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 12 slices stale bread slices
- ½ cup pecans (optional)
Directions
- Pre-heat over to 350°F.
- In a small saucepan over medium heat, add the butter, brown sugar and corn syrup. Stir constantly. When it starts to bubble but not boil, remove from heat. Grease a 9×12” glass baking dish. Pour sauce into the dish. Sprinkle with nuts if desired.
- Mix eggs, milk and vanilla. Whisk well until slightly frothy.
- Dip 6 slices of bread into egg mixture. Place on top of the caramel in the dish. Scatter sliced apples over the top of the bread. Dip remaining bread in egg mixture and place over apples lining each with the bottom piece of bread. Pour the rest of the egg mixture over the bread. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
- Sprinkle top with cinnamon and nutmeg. Bake for 30-40 minutes until slightly puffy.
